2007 Alexis de Tocqueville Society

United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society recognizes locally and nationally the generosity of individuals contributing at the highest levels of personal giving of $10,000 or more annually. These caring philanthropists exemplify an outstanding commitment to improving the quality of life in our community. The society is named for the French nobleman Alexis de Tocqueville who visited our young nation in 1831.  He found in America a spirit of volunteerism and community unknown in Europe of the early 1800s and wrote eloquently about this remarkable trait.

“ As soon as individuals with a cause have found one another out, they combine. From that moment, they are no longer isolated people, but a power seen from afar, whose actions serve for an example and whose language is listened to.”                                                                                          — Alexis de Tocqueville
